The main task of a PLM professional in professional practice consists of shaping the interplay between value creation and information technology. This includes accompanying a product along the entire value chain, starting with product planning, development and production, through logistics to the care and maintenance of a product. This task - like the introduction of new solutions in a company - must always be aligned with the people, organization and processes involved.
In order to meet the requirements of these tasks, the practice-oriented competence profile of a PLM professional includes not only expertise of information flows between people, models and IT systems along specialist processes in the product lifecycle, the conception and planning of improvement measures in the interaction of these information flows or the specification and introduction support of new IT solutions, but also the ability to plan and control change processes and to moderate communication between the stakeholders involved.
